Hyundai tries new equation with 2012 Veloster

Neither coupe nor sedan, the three-door hatchback sports a style like nothing else on the market

Three is a lonely number in the auto industry. It was once used to describe coupe hatchbacks as a "three-door" because carmakers' silly aversion to the word "hatchback."

And coupes, most of which are actually hatchbacks, are rarely popular outside of the sports car segment.

But now Hyundai has put a new twist on the number 3 — creating a sporty compact car that defies logic and description. Technically, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is not a coupe; it comes with three working doors. Those three doors also mean that it's one opening short of a sedan; though its rear hatch, which carmakers insist is a door, when it isn't, means the Veloster could be labeled a four-door sedan.

The little 1.6-liter direct injection engine gives the Veloster some muscle with 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque.  That's more than enough to tool around town or cruise down the highway.  There are paddle-like shifters with the automatic that can help hold gears longer for additional pick up.

The Veloster seems to handle itself on the road pretty well. During a day of driving, the stiff, light body (the manual model tips the scales at just over 2,500 pounds) handled itself very well. The electric rack-and-pinion steering is not as firm as you'd expect in a sports car, but it holds itself well through corners and feels comfortable on the highway.

The manual Veloster will get you 40 mpg highway and 28 mpg city. (The automatic Veloster hits 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway.)

A look that stands out

But the Veloster is different than all of those compact cars. It has a very distinctive look, like nothing else on the market.

The low, flat roofline gives it a unique profile, and if you opt for the $2,000-style package, the roof looks as if it's entirely made of glass. (It's part of the Panoramic sunroof.) That package also includes 18-inch wheels that look fantastic stuffed up inside its flared fenders.

The low clearance — 5.6 inches — gives the Veloster a mean street look. Its front face is taut and the headlights stretch back and cut into the fenders. The tiny grille and open intakes below the bumper add to that aggressive look.

The rear is equally as mean. The dual glass hatch looks better from the outside looking in than the inside looking out. (You'll see the bar that connects the pieces in your rear view mirror, though your view is not that obstructed.) And the dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes add a shiny jewel to the tail of the package.

The interior is appealing with comfortable, well-bolstered seats, and an asymmetrical dash and lots of gadgets to play with.

There's a nice feel to the front two seats, and the Veloster feels techno-friendly and spacious. There's a 7-inch, high-resolution touch screen at the top of the center stack that is bookended with long, narrow vents.

The controls below the screen are easy to use.

The Veloster also features Hyundai's Blue Link, the next step in telematics and infotainment. It's much more than Bluetooth connectivity and doesn't require a smartphone. There are three basic layers: Assurance, Essentials and Guidance.

Assurance includes safety assistance, collision help (when airbags deploy) and roadside assistance. Think Korean OnStar.

Essentials includes voice-text messaging (which requires the phone to be connected to the car via Bluetooth) and location sharing, which at the touch of a button on the mirror sends your car's location to a predetermined group of friends and your Facebook page. Guidance adds all of the navigation assistance pieces such as traffic alerts, route guidance and the price of gas at nearby locations, as well as turn-by-turn navigation.

Really, none of the ideas are new to the automotive world, but Hyundai has done a good job of packaging them. It will take a few minutes to review and learn them before getting on the road, but it's time well spent.

And of course, there's that third door. The second-row door is on the passenger's side to make it safer for curbside unloading and loading. Really, that makes more sense.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo by ARK Performance Revealed: SEMA Preview

ARK Performance has been hard at work on their SEMA 2011 Project Hyundai Veloster, and now finished photos of the vehicle have popped up online at Veloster.org. The theme of the project was to build a rally-inspired Veloster, featuring a custom twin-scroll turbo setup giving it 210-hp while its bright green and flat gray paint scheme gives it the aggressive look it needs.

ARK fabricated the custom turbo kit and intercooler system and also outfitted the Veloster with a six-piston brake kit, eight-point chromoly rally-style roll cage, and DTP track coilover system. Additional suspension modifications include front and rear upper sway bars, camber arms and control arms, ARK’s GRIP dual exhaust, downpipes and test pipes.

For the inside, ARK turned to JPM Coachworks to outfit the Veloster with Alcantara interior upgrades on the seats, shift boot, dashboard, headliner, doors and visors. A custom stereo install featuring Image Dynamics components was also done thanks to Adam Perry.

ARK focused on the aesthetics, transforming the subtle Veloster to one mean looking machine thanks to their CFX Designs line of accessories. ARK outfitted the Veloster with their own front and rear wide fenders, front lip, side skirts, rear bumper and grille. In the rear is an ARK SFX rear wing while OneEighty supplied the project with new headlights, taillights and fog lamps. The wheels are Advan’s RZ in Gunmetal wrapped with Nitto NT05 rubber. The custom paint on the body was done by Beyond Autobody.

A Redone Hyundai Elantra Touring is due in U.S. next year!

A redesigned Hyundai Elantra Touring wagon -- not really an Elantra and known to most of the world outside North America as the i30 -- will be brought to the U.S. next year, Hyundai U.S. officials had told Drive On that the new version would come to the U.S. eventually.

The redone i30 -- which is sold in hatchback and wagon models and is a hot seller in Europe -- was first shown last month at the Frankfurt Motor show. And today, the South Korean automaker gave it an official rollout event, complete with models, in Seoul.

While the hatch has never been sold in North America, the wagon, rebadged as the Elantra Touring, has had critical success and modest sales for high value and features in a small wagon.

AFP says Hyundai expects the redone i30 to up the competition against such vehicles as the arch-rival Volkswagen Golf and that it hopes to sell 215,000 of the new model next year -- 190,000 of them outside South Korea.

Following the Frankfurt show, German auto news and shopping research site Auto Motor und Sport reported, citing unnamed sources, that Hyundai plans an i30 hybrid version -- possibly a plug-in -- at least for Europe in 2013 to compete there with Toyota's Prius and other coming electrics.

Supercharged Hyundai Genesis Hurricane SC to bow at SEMA

The 2012 Veloster may be Hyundai's new hotness, but the Genesis Coupe is still its flagship performance car. And with this year's SEMA show right around the corner, Hyundai is quickly readying a full fleet of tuner cars to debut in Las Vegas. Here, we see the Genesis Hurricane SC – a collaboration between the Hyundai America Technical Center (HATCI) and companies like Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International and Torvec Inc.

3423811628
As its name suggests, the swan song of this tuned Genesis Coupe is its engine – a supercharged version of Hyundai's 3.8-liter V6. Adding this supercharger means the Hurricane is good for more than 450 horsepower, and Torvec Inc. has fitted its IsoTorque differential to allow for improved handling and traction. When tested on the road course at Hyundai's proving grounds, this new differential allowed the Hurricane to be one second quicker lap over lap than a standard Genesis Coupe.

Rhys Millen Racing provided the new front bumper, grille, side skirts, hood, diffuser and rear deck, and the company's partners – Enkei and Hankook – are responsible for the 19-inch wheel and tire package. Inside, there's a high-level Lexicon audio system and custom Katzkin leather upholstery with blue suede inserts on the seats. After all, it wouldn't be SEMA without heaps of suede.

Hyundai has only released this one teaser image as of this writing, but we'll be sure to bring you a full gallery live from SEMA next month.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata takes the win for Best in Value.

The Top 10 Cars of 2011: Auto Excellence Awards

2011 Hyundai Sonata

Popular Mechanics's Value Award

In pro sports, the Most Valuable Player trophy doesn't always go to the player with the best stats; sometimes, intangibles add up to an obvious MVP. Similarly, the Hyundai Sonata was a clear choice for the 2011 PMV—Popular Mechanics's Value—award. What Hyundai has achieved with the redesign of its bread-and-butter sedan is, in a word, astonishing. One glance tells much of the story, as the vehicle looks more like a luxury coupe than a midsize economy sedan. Gone is the V6, replaced with a 200-hp four-cylinder. Or opt for a turbocharged four-banger with 274 hp, which makes you forget about the lack of a V6 in the lineup. There's even a hybrid model that gets over 30 mpg. Options aside, the Sonata's standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control (ESC), traction control and antilock brakes with brake assist. Throw in Hyundai's 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty and it makes you wonder what luxury carmakers will have to do to keep calling themselves luxury carmakers.
