Road Trip Guide: 5 Secrets to Beating Thanksgiving Traffic

Timthumb
It’s no secret that Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest times for travel during the year, so if you’re one of the 43.6 million Americans (39.1 million drivers) AAA is predicting will be traveling at least 50 miles from home this year, here are some tips to give you an advantage.

With the potential of a Thanksgiving storm, it’s important to do a full check of your vehicle before getting on the road. This is an obvious tip, but it’s something many people overlook. Don’t just fill up and take off, it’s important to check your oil, brake fluid, coolant, and especially your tires and tire pressure before getting on the road for a long trip.

1. Plan out an alternate route.

More travelers mean more cars, and more accidents, make sure you have at least one alternate route planned out that you can take to avoid huge delays. Try to plan your route along less popular freeways. Even if the mileage is a bit more it will be worth it when you’re driving 65 for that extra 10 miles than stuck locked in traffic for an extra 2 hours. This is also a good idea for those traveling very long distances where weather may be an issue.

2. Have a connected navigator.

It doesn’t do you any good knowing about a great alternate route when you’re already swamped in traffic, so try to have a passenger that can look online at the traffic as you go. There are tons of great apps out there like Sigalert.com, Waze, and INRIX Traffic. With the help of your passenger and one of these apps you can see where the trouble areas are on the road and proactively avoid them. If you plan on going it alone make sure to pull off the road before using your phone. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of single passenger vehicles.

3. Leave at an awkward hour.

Driving at night may not be fun, but it is a great way to avoid the traffic saving you time and stress. Consider resting all day and not getting on the road until 9pm. It is important to make sure that you get plenty of rest before setting out on a long night drive, as fatigued driving creates a huge hazard on the road.

4. Make your drive on Thanksgiving Day.

Generally the traffic is much lighter across the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day itself, meaning that you can avoid the hassle of traffic the day before and get where you’re going without having to leave at a strange hour or risk sitting in traffic for hours. Unless you are traveling an extreme distance, leaving at 6 am Thursday morning should give you more than enough time to make it wherever you are going in time for dinner.

5. Leave early!

Sunday is by far the worst day to be making your return trip, and the traffic will only increase as the day goes on and the last of the stragglers are getting back on the road. Friday is the best day to hit the road for the return trip. Of course that does not leave you a whole lot of time to visit the family if you just drove up the day before, consider taking off the following Monday and returning then. That way you’ll miss all of the holiday traffic, and have an extra two days to spend with the family — OK, maybe just leave Friday.

Black Book: Hyundai MPG Issue to Have Little Impact on Vehicle Values Read more: Autoremarketing | Black Book: Hyundai MPG Issue to Have Little Impact on Vehicle Values

Black Booktook a closer look at used-vehicle value impact stemming from Hyundai and Kia admitting last week they overstated the fuel economy of models sold during the last two years.
While there has been talk of broader ramifications to the brands, Black Book believes this acknowledgement will have little impact on future retention values.
Black Book editors arrived at that determination based on three points:
—Roughly 900,000 vehicles sold during the last two years were included in the overstated fuel economy admission.
Both brands said they would reimburse consumers and restate mileage estimates on specific models.
Drivers of these vehicles will be issued a debit card for reimbursement, expected to average approximately $88 based on a vehicle that averaged 15,000 miles this year.
—Black Book did not see retention and vehicle values on used models change noticeably on Toyota models impacted during the large recalls of 2008-2009. Beggs said these vehicles continued to follow segment trends.
—Black Book indicated larger market drivers will continue to impact vehicle values going forward.
The Hyundai Elantra is part of the compact cars vehicle segment, which has a current Black Book overall segment average of $7,176 today and down 6.9 percent since the end of August when it stood at $7,710).
The Hyundai Sonata is part of the upper mid-size car segment, which has a current Black Book overall segment average of $9,075 today and down 6.1 percent since the end of August when it settled at $9,662.

Tricked-out 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe rock and rolls

2013_hyundai_santa_fe_0
Hyundai is one of the most progressive automakers and is partnering with Rolling Stone where families can enter a contest for a chance to win a fully tricked-out 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe custom Rock ‘N’ Roller. Hyundai hasn’t released any other details on the family rock n roller except that it has a cool custom paint job with flames on the sides. It also appears that the tricked-out grocery hauler has large flat-black five-spoke custom wheels to go along with the black exterior finish.

Hyundai Motor Group is one of the most progressive automakers around and they have found new and innovative ways to reach their target group of buyers. This new contest is designed for young families who are just having kids and aren’t ready to “settle down.” Hyundai is appealing to a generation who wants to know that “”having kids doesn’t mean it’s time to stop rocking, it’s just the start of a new band.”

Driving in Snow and Ice

Snowdriving11

The best advice for driving in bad winter weather is not to drive at all, if you can avoid it.

Don't go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination.

If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared (TIPS), and that you know how to handle road conditions.

It's helpful to practice winter driving techniques in a snowy, open parking lot, so you're familiar with how your car handles. Consult your owner's manual for tips specific to your vehicle.

Driving safely on icy roads

  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.
  5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
  6. Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
  7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
  8. Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
  9. Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.

If your rear wheels skid...

  1. Take your foot off the accelerator.
  2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
  3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
  4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
  5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.

If your front wheels skid...

  1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
  2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

If you get stuck...

  1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
  2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
  3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
  4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
  5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
  6. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.
