Hyundai Veloster Wins 2011 GOOD DESIGN Awards’ Transportation Category

01-2012-hyundai-veloster

South Korean automakers have been on a roll for the past two years and there are no signs of letting off. A radical departure from Hyundais of the past, the new Hyundai Veloster earned GOOD DESIGN award in the transportation category. Held at the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, GOOD DESIGN awards are handed annually to the most innovative designers in a broad array of industries– not just automotive.

According to Hyundai Motor America director of Product Planning, Scott Margason, “With Veloster, we want to show consumers that high style, fuel efficiency and affordable pricing can all be found in one vehicle. Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design. We’re honored that GOOD DESIGN is recognizing the beautiful design and unique personality of the car.”

Highlights of the Veloster’s design are its three-door layout. While this design has been adopted by the and Saturn SC-2 3-door coupe in the past, the third door is opened conventionally rather than suicide, retains a B-pillar for structural rigidity, and has its own exterior door handle rather than needing to rely on the front door to open first. What’s more, designers compliment the Hyundai for its bold design statement and its distinctive forms including black A-pillars to give the sports coupe an aggressive motorcycle helmet visor appearance. A distinctive glass hatch in the rear and dual centered chrome exhaust tips carry the edgy design to the rear. Inside, the center console is designed to resemble a sport bike fuel tank while HVAC air vents are heavily influenced by motorcycle tailpipes.

Christopher Chapman, Designer of BMW X5, to Head Hyundai Studios in California

On Thursday, Hyundai announced that it hired Christopher Chapman from the BMW DesignworksUSA studio in Newbury Park, Calif., to be chief designer at the Hyundai Design Center in nearby Irvine.

Less than a year ago, the former General Motors designer Phil Zak stood at the Hyundai stand at the Detroit auto show and introduced the Veloster three-door hatchback and Curb crossover concept. But Mr. Zak returned to G.M. in March, vacating the position to which Mr. Chapman was appointed this week.

Mr. Chapman is best known for directing the design of the BMW X5. He also guided exterior design of the X-Coupe concept of 2001, which was the first enunciation of the flame, or expressionist, surface philosophy of Christopher Bangle, the design chief of BMW at the time. Mr. Chapman is also credited with the first-generation BMW 1 Series hatchback, known internally as the E87, which wasn’t sold in the United States.

He was appointed the director of automotive design at DesignworksUSA in 2002. He has been in charge of recent models like the Z4 sports car and the redesigned X3 crossover.

Mr. Chapman has been head of the transportation department at DesignworksUSA, which also serves clients in areas outside the car industry, since 2008. The department designs aircraft interiors, yachts and metro trains, among other projects. In July, the consultancy was retained by Bay Area Rapid Transit to develop trains to replace the agency’s aging fleet. Mr. Chapman also spent two years of his career at the BMW studios in Munich.

The bearded, affable Mr. Chapman is popular in the Los Angeles auto design community. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and joined Isuzu’s technical center in California in 1989. His Isuzu XU-1 was named Best Concept at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show, according to a release from Hyundai. An S.U.V. with gullwing doors, it informed the shape of the eventual VehiCross and suggested Mr. Chapman’s interest in making S.U.V.’s sportier and less trucklike.

Hyundai and Kia, its sister brand, have impressed design observers with their rapid evolution of clear and dynamic styles to represent their brands. Kia, however, might be more front-of-mind than its corporate sibling, aided by Peter Schreyer, the former Audi design chief who took charge at the Korean automaker in 2006. Mr. Schreyer was named Automobile magazine’s 2011 Man of the Year.

Even so, Hyundai’s success in rapidly raising the level of its design is no less striking. The creases and character lines of the company form language suggest extreme interpretations of some of BMW’s expressive forms — a look credited not as much to Mr. Zak as to to Joel Piaskowski. Mercedes-Benz hired Mr. Piaskowski away from Hyundai to become head of advanced design at the German brand’s North American design center in January 2009. He later moved to Ford.

“We are thrilled to have Christopher Chapman as chief designer for Hyundai and look forward to continuing the strong momentum of our vehicle designs,” said SukGeun Oh, the head of design for the Hyundai brand, in a media release.

John Krafcik, the president and chief executive of Hyundai Motor America, called Mr. Chapman “an outstanding addition to the design team.”

Six Hyundai Models Earn 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick Honors

Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, Genesis, Equus, Tucson and Santa Fe Achieve Highest Safety Ratings

COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 15, 2011Six Hyundai models, the all-new Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, Genesis, Equus, Tucson and Santa Fe, achieved the 2012 Top Safety Pick honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on “good” ratings in Institute tests. Winners must also have available Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.

“Safety has always been a top priority at Hyundai, so we are thrilled to see six of our models on this important and prestigious list,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Having led the industry in standardizing Electronic Stability Control for the midsize sedan segment back in 2005, Hyundai is committed to developing and providing the best in both passive and active safety technologies.”

The IIHS Top Safety Pick ratings help consumers pick vehicles that offer a higher level of protection than federal safety standards require. In 2010, the Institute toughened the criteria for Top Safety Pick by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a “good” rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.

“For the second year running a record number of models qualify,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “It’s tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority.”

Hyundai Launches Interactive Racing Game On New York Times Square Billboard

COSTA MESA, Calif., December 20, 2011 – Hyundai Motor Company launched an interactive racing game called “HYUNDAI RACE” on its prominent Times Square video billboard today. Times Square visitors can play the high-quality racing game featuring the all-new Hyundai Veloster on the big screen and simulate the real driving experience.

“HYUNDAI RACE” is controlled by tilting a smart phone, just like turning the steering wheel when driving a car. Players can easily download the controller for “HYUNDAI RACE” from the App Store. Then, by connecting to the free Hyundai WiFi network in Times Square, players can control their vehicle on the big screen just as if they were playing a racing game on their smart phone. When players finish the race, their score will appear on the billboard and show their ranking among other players.

“HYUNDAI RACE” will be on the billboard until the end of this year, and Hyundai will continuously deliver other innovative interactive experiences in Times Square next year.

“HYUNDAI RACE” is a strategy that aligns with Hyundai’s new brand direction –

“New Thinking. New Possibilities.” – which debuted at 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new brand direction aims to provide customers with experiences beyond expectations through innovative thinking.

The all-new 2012 Veloster, which made its debut at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, is another example of Hyundai’s new brand direction. The vehicle features an innovative three-door compact coupe design with the functionality of a hatch and a passenger-side forward-hinged rear door. The Veloster racing game is the first in the world to launch with high-quality graphic resolution on the Times Square billboard that offers a realistic driving experience.

“Having a large video display in Times Square certainly creates awareness among consumers through creative graphic elements. But Hyundai’s racing game takes engagement to a new level,” said Steve Shannon, vice president of Marketing, Hyundai Motor America. “The game invites the audience to interact with Hyundai in the middle of one of the world’s busiest venues for commerce and tourism. It’s a great example of our innovative marketing at work.”

Hyundai has been marketing in New York Times Square along with global leading brands since November 2009. Times Square billboards draw 1.5 million impressions a day in one of the world’s most iconic locations for exposing brands.

Rhys Millen Heists a Genesis Coupe Drift Car from Hyundai Headquarters

About two weeks before the wrecking ball was about to completely demolish the old Hyundai Motor America headquarters building in Fountain Valley, California, Hyundai had a crazy thought: Wouldn't it be cool to do something outrageous inside the building before all the walls finally came down?

Hyundai Veloster Named "Best Economy Car" By Bloomberg

Img-607
The all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster earned the title of “Best Economy Car” in Bloomberg’s recent “Best Drives of 2011.” The Veloster is an innovative compact coupe that features ground-breaking design, with a unique third door for easy rear-seat access, Hyundai’s Blue Link® telematics system, Pandora® internet radio with seven-inch touch-screen display and a new 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine that can be mated to either Hyundai’s first EcoShift™ dual-clutch transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. The Veloster is also one of four Hyundai vehicles that achieve 40 mpg on the highway, along with the Accent, Elantra and Sonata Hybrid.
In the third annual roundup of the year’s best vehicles compiled by Bloomberg,
Veloster drew praise from the editors for “amenities like touch-screen navigation, automatic everything, Bluetooth and a rear-view camera.”
“Hyundai has four models which hit the 40 mpg mark, only one a hybrid. That’s progress for the people,” said Jason Harper, Bloomberg’s auto critic. “Most of us want a nice-driving, good-looking automobile that won’t sledgehammer us into debt. Hyundai has gotten in the habit of over-delivering very good cars at underwhelming prices. The Veloster is the most out-and-out fun.”
Joining the Veloster as “Best Drives of 2011” are the Range Rover Evoque, the Lamborghini Aventador, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe and the Overall 2011 Winner, the Audi A7.
As expected for the winner of the “Best Economy Car” segment, the Veloster combines its dynamic design, wealth of technology and outstanding fuel efficiency with great value -- The Veloster starts at $17,300 (plus freight).
“We recognize that Bloomberg’s reporters and readers are among the most financially savvy and astute car buyers in the world,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “With this in mind, it’s a tremendous honor that the publication appreciates all of the Veloster’s outstanding qualities in the compact coupe segment, from the telematics’ benefits of Blue Link™ to a fun, yet fuel-efficient 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that yields outstanding fuel economy, combined with an affordable sticker price.”

Hyundai Veloster Scores Auto Style Award

2012-hyundai-veloster
If you plan on becoming a citizen of eCityofStyle.com—a top resource for the country’s “cool hunters”—you should be sure to have the Hyundai Veloster in your sights: After all, the website recently honored the striking three-door coupe with a 2012 Auto Style Award, adding it to a list that includes vehicles like the BMW 6 Series, Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG and Fiat 500.

This was the second consecutive Auto Style Award for the automaker, which earned recognition on the 2011 list for the luxurious Hyundai Equus.

Of this year’s Hyundai winner, eCityofStyle.com’s editors wrote: “Gone are the days of Hyundai’s budget car status. Today, the Korean automaker is a legitimate threat to the establishment, designing cars that look considerably more expensive than they really are. The Veloster is perhaps Hyundai’s most successful execution of its new design language, called Fluidic Sculpture. From the tight front end to the sculpted side creases to the powerful wheel arches, the Veloster’s exterior is both aggressive and sleek.”

The Veloster is as smart as it is stylish, too, thanks to a high-efficiency powertrain that can deliver EPA ratings of up to 28 mpg city/40 mpg highway/32 mpg combined with its slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission or 29 mpg city/38 mpg highway/32 mpg combined with Hyundai’s in-house-designed six-speed automatic. The Hyundai boasts a smart price as well, especially as compared to the other Auto Style Award winners: The Veloster’s MSRP begins at $17,300, which provides a price advantage for the Hyundai ranging from $200 as compared to a Fiat 500 Sport up to a staggering $77,600 as compared to the Mercedes.

“With Veloster, we want to show consumers that high style and reasonable pricing can go hand in hand,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design. We’re honored that eCityofStyle is recognizing the beautiful design and unique personality of the car.”

Hyundai’s 2012 Tucson named as Kelley Blue Book top resale value pick

2012-hyundai-tucson
Hyundai’s 2012 Tucson CUV has been placed on Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Award’s Top 10 list. The automotive-information resource reserves this list for vehicles expected to best retain their value over the next five years.

"Hyundai's year-over-year gain in average residual value of 4.5 percentage points was one of the best in the industry," said Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting for Kelley Blue Book. … “Among this year's top 10 model winners, the Hyundai Tucson is holding its value exceedingly well, gaining more than 10 percentage points from last year with a 60-month residual value of 45.3 percent. With Hyundai's improvements in styling and performance that results in more consumers shopping for Hyundai vehicles, this brand is clearly one to watch."

Depreciation is generally a car owner’s primary expense. Kelley Blue Book’s annual Best Resale Value Awards are designed to help buyers make informed decisions with this in mind.

"The Tucson does an excellent job of artfully combining state-of-the-art safety features, design and affordability, allowing it to retain a high value throughout the course of ownership," said Mike O'Brien, vice president of product and corporate planning for Hyundai Motor America. "Hyundai is proud to offer its Trade-In Value Guarantee as part of Hyundai Assurance, and this program is made possible due to the strength of Hyundai vehicles' residual values, like the Tucson."

The carmaker’s Trade-In Value Guarantee is intended to eliminate concern about depreciation by guaranteeing value for vehicles between 24 and 48 months of ownership.

Hyundai Unites With the Recording Academy® as Official Vehicle Partner

Three-year Partnership Connects Music’s Biggest Brand with Hyundai’s Passion for Creativity to bring Original Works of Art to Music Fans

Tapping into the power of music, Hyundai joined forces with music’s biggest brand – The Recording Academy® (internationally known for the GRAMMY Awards®) – to become its “Official Vehicle Partner.” The multi-year partnership extends well beyond awards night and will result in original music projects sure to please music fans across many genres and categories. In addition to being the exclusive GRAMMY® vehicle partner, Hyundai is working directly with The Recording Academy to identify and support new projects reflecting the brand’s creativity and desire to celebrate music year-round.

The partnership is being forged as Hyundai launches the 2012 Veloster, an innovative three-door coupe including technology that will change the way creative individuals experience driving. The first of many collaborations with The Academy is a unique concept called the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT that will yield a documentary film called “RE:GENERATION” which follows five modern DJs who - through the use of technology - are changing the way the world creates and experiences music. The project will also create five new electronic music tracks influenced by everything from country to classical. The new tracks include participation from multiple GRAMMY Award winners as they collaborate with each DJ to re-imagine their genre in each DJs’ unique style.

“The all-new Hyundai Veloster, our three-door sporty coupe, connects with an audience that loves music,” said Steve Shannon, vice president of marketing, Hyundai Motor America. “Music and driving go hand-in-hand and Veloster gives creative individuals the tools to re-imagine a modern music soundtrack. Over the next few years, we’ll commission original works of art and new music projects that we can share with music fans everywhere, and the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT is the perfect kick-off to our collaboration with the GRAMMYs.”

34261_1_1
A trailer of the “RE:GENERATION” film is available at: www.regenerationmusicproject.com and at youtube.com/veloster. Music videos and song downloads for all five music tracks will also be posted. More than 1.25 million visitors have already accessed content from the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT through social media channels. As the sole benefactor, Hyundai will also bring the story, content and experiences to this creative audience through film screenings, music festivals, digital apps, social media, online streaming and PR over the next 12 months. The Recording Academy will help make the film available by hosting special screenings and through its own social media channels.

"We are thrilled to partner with Hyundai to connect fans and car consumers to the power of music on Music's Biggest Night® and throughout the year," said Evan Greene, chief marketing officer for The Recording Academy. "Our brand partnership celebrates excellence in music and innovation, and we look forward to nurturing this relationship with exciting and creative projects over the next year."

Hyundai will play a starring role for the GRAMMYs as both the “Official Vehicle Partner” of the GRAMMY Awards and GRAMMY Week. Hyundai’s partnership begins with two 60-second spots on the Nov. 30 CBS GRAMMY Nomination Show which will include content from the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT as well as behind-the-scenes footage. Then, as part of GRAMMY Week, Hyundai vehicles will grace the red carpet, chauffeur stars to the awards ceremony, and be on display at the official GRAMMY Celebration® after-party, as well as the Special Merit Awards and GRAMMY Nominee Reception. Hyundai will also be a part of the Pre-GRAMMY Gala & GRAMMY Salute To Industry Icons® event at The Beverly Hilton Hotel the night before the awards telecast. Ten GRAMMY viewing parties in Recording Academy Chapter cities will include Hyundai displays as well. The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards are set to air live from Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 12, 2012, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Hyundai Launches All-new Azera in L.A.

2012-hyundai-azera_1
Just introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai’s full-size family sedan—the Azera—receives a full-size makeover for the 2012 model year, showcasing a new look, new powertrain and new levels of interior comfort. The sleek and sophisticated sedan is the capstone to Hyundai’s 24/7 version 2.0 product initiative, which has seen the introduction of seven all-new vehicles in the past 24 months, including the Tucson, Sonata, Equus, Elantra, Accent and Veloster.

And like those vehicles, the 2012 Azera now wears the Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” design language. It’s an appearance designed to appeal to the emotions, with flowing lines, a bolder grille bracketed by HID headlamps, and an athletic, aggressive stance, all encasing a premium, highly detailed interior. That cabin offers significantly more room for 2012 as well, with front-seat passengers enjoying best-in-class legroom and headroom: More than 45 inches of the former and over 40 inches of the latter.

Other standard enjoyment enhancers in the cabin include:

  • Touchscreen navigation with a rearview camera—the only such standard package in the Azera’s class
  • Ambient lighting and “3D Carbon” accents
  • Power rear sunshade and class-exclusive manual shades for the side rear windows
  • Electrochromic auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Seven-speaker “Dimension” AM/FM/HD/Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio with iPod/USB/auxiliary input
  • Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free phone system and voice recognition
  • 90-day complimentary subscription to Hyundai’s comprehensive Blue Link telematics system with agent-assisted look-up
  • Cooled glove box
  • Dual automatic climate control with second-row air vents
  • A wide-range of premium seating features, like heated leather seating surfaces (front and back), a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, an eight-way adjustable front-passenger seat and a new impact-reducing safety system that is expected to reduce head and neck injuries by 17 percent as compared to the 2011 Azera

Key interior options include front ventilated seats and a powerful 550-watt Logic 7 audio system from Infinity, with 12 speakers—including an eight-inch subwoofer—and available external amplifier.

Also amplified is the Azera’s power—and fuel economy. Providing the motivation for the 2012 Azera is a high-tech 3.3-liter V6 with features such as gasoline direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. Backed by this kind of technology, the lightweight, all-aluminum engine delivers a significant power upgrade to the Azera, which now packs 293 hp (an increase of 33 hp) and 255 lb.-ft. of torque (22 lb.-ft. more than for 2011). But at the same time, this high-efficiency powerplant also provides improved fuel efficiency, which is now up to 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway/23 mpg combined—no other car in the Azera’s segment does better. The standard transmission: Hyundai’s own six-speed automatic.

Hyundai engineers also made sure that the Azera’s ride and handling were improved to match, courtesy of suspension innovations like ZF Sachs’ Amplitude Selective Dampers (ASD). This system enhances ride comfort and driver control, but without compromising the car’s surprisingly nimble reflexes. Much attention to weight reduction helps here, too. In fact, the Azera is more than 200 lbs. lighter than the Buick LaCrosse and more than 400 lbs. lighter than the Ford Taurus.

Conversely, customers can expect the all-new 2012 Hyundai Azera to have a heavy impact on the sales scene when it comes to market early next year.

Hyundai's new Azera sedan: Not luxury... Or is it?

Hyundai's new Azera full-size sedan has a 293-horsepower engine, heated leather seats front and back, a standard navigation system with a rear camera, a full suite of safety gear, xenon headlights and LED rear lights. But make no mistake: Hyundai doesn't consider it a luxury car.

For all its features, the new Azera is a front-wheel drive that's larger than Hyundai's popular Elantra and Sonata sedans. That makes it unlike the big, luxurious Hyundai Genesis and Equus sedans that have startled the luxury market.

Azera is so proletarian, in fact, that Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik, in a light-hearted moment after the Azera's introduction at the Los Angeles Auto Show yesterday, said could be a good choice for practical-minded investment bankers under seize by Occupy Wall Street protesters.

"It might be the perfect car for the 1% who don't want to be lambasted by the 99%," he joked.

Azera is powered by a more powerful Lambda II 3.3-liter fuel-injected V-6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission transmission. Yet it will get combined fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon.

Krafcik says the car will compete against models like the Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 300 and Nissan Maxima. But he said that consumers in marketing surveys thought it might be a ready alternative to a Lexus, a pure luxury brand.

Remember, though. Azera is not a luxury car.

New spy shots of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra hit the web before of its official public unveiling!

New Hyundai Elantra Coupe, which is scheduled to make its official U.S. premiere at the L.A. Auto Show next week, has been caught sitting in a parking lot not far away from Hyundai Motor America’s headquarters.

Thanks to its heavy camouflage, the pictured car on the images exposes only a bit of sheetmetal, but we can clearly see it is a 2-door coupe with elongated door on each side. The forth-coming Elantra Coupe also sports a new alloy-wheels design and small spoiler at rear, while distinctive headlights confirm this is definately the Elantra 4-door sedan sibling model.

At this point we have no confirmed information about the 2013 Elantra Coupe’s powertrain options and performance figures, however, we are expecting the 2-door coupe to feature the same 148-horsepower 1.8L Nu four-cylinder engine as found under the hood of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra sedan.

A six-speed manual transmission is expected to be available across all trim levels, while six-speed automatic gearbox will be optional.

As mentioned before, the all-new 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe will make its premiere at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show on Novemebr 16, at 10:30 am – Pacific time.

A special thank you to the authors of these wonderful reviews on our dealership. Great work team!

"I went here to buy my first ever car, and despite being inexperienced and rather nervous about the whole thing, the people here (and Lisa, the sales rep) were very nice about the whole thing, and made the process as painless as could be. They were all very informative and friendly, and by the time it was done I was rolling off the lot in my new Accent--which is, by the way, an awesome car. But yeah, they all did everything they could to help me out and make sure I got what I needed while understanding what was happening. Everyone made sure my first experience with buying a car was the best. Thanks, everyone!" - Leigh

"I stumbled upon Inver Grove Hyundai when my Santa Fe had to be towed in from Wisconsin last year to have a warrantied item repaired. They were the closest dealership to my home. I was so impressed with their service that I switched from the dealership where I had bought the car and I've never looked back. I traded in my 2009 Santa Fe for a 2011 Tucson there last summer and now always use them for maintanance. For both Service and Sales they are top-drawer professionals- courteous, responsive and above all accountable. They've made dealing with dealerships a pleasure." - Eaganbanker

"Great staff friendly staff!!!! Angie, Hung, and Bob are the greatest! Received the best deal on my Veloster and they even located a Maunal Transmission for me from Wisconsin, talk about going the extra distance. Love my new car and love talking to the staff. Thanks again guys." - Nicdub

"What a great experience! My saleperson Mike was awesome and Carrie in finance went above and beyond to get the deal done!! Thank you!! I love my Tucson. I recommend this dealer to anyone who is looking for a new or used vehicle and great people to work with!!!" - Lisa

“The Hyundai Veloster is a combination of a hip and edgy image, along with exceptional value and outstanding fuel economy"

Decisive magazine has named the 2012 Veloster the “Urban Car of the Year,” an award selected by a panel of independent automotive journalists, who spend several months testing and evaluating vehicles looking for those that are “stylish, practical and attainable.”

Winners and finalists of the Urban Vehicles of the Year will be honored at the 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 at the MotorCity Casino Hotel’s Sound Board Theater in Detroit.

"My experience at Inver Grove Hyundai was just terrific. I was looking for a specific flavor of the Santa Fe and they had it. Lisa, my sales rep was outstanding. She was not only knowledgeable on the car, but also infectiously enthusiastic. She made the entire process fun and quick. 3 hours after arriving, I was driving home my new car. Couldn't be happier (… unless I win the lottery tomorrow)."

Hyundai Drops the 5.0L V8 into the RMR Genesis Coupe: SEMA 2011

So, what's missing from the Hyundai Genesis Coupe (other than a little bit of history, that is) to enable it to play in the big boys league? Why a V8 powerplant of course, and who better to make the transplant than Rhys Millen and his performance shop.

Making its world premiere yesterday at the Las Vegas 2011 SEMA Show is the RM500 Genesis Coupe complete with Hyundai's most powerful stock engine under its hood, the 5.0-liter Tau V8.

“From the moment I saw the Tau V8 engine in the Genesis R-Spec and Equus, I knew it would be a perfect fit for the Genesis Coupe, adding even more performance and power to the dynamic coupe,” said Rhys Millen, owner, Rhys Millen Racing [RMR].

Even though RMR's goal was to keep everything else as sleek and stock as possible, the tuning firm couldn't resist some mild modifications to the 5.0-liter mill that gained a titanium tip exhaust, oil cooler and rear differential cooler for an extra 20 horsepower boost, lifting output to 449-horses.

The RM500 also debuts a new line of RMR products for the South Korean maker's rear-wheel drive coupe including a comprehensive but not over-the-top, carbon-fiber aero package comprising of a front lip, spoiler, rear diffuser, side skirts, fog light ducts and grill, plus new 19-inch alloy wheels and Brembo carbon ceramic rotors with Brembo six and four piston calipers.

The only changes to the interior include an RMR suede trim package and Sparco accents.

Hyundai Veloster Named “Urban Car of the Year” by Decisive Magazine

The all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster three-door coupe earned the “Urban Car of the Year” title from Decisive magazine. “The Urban Vehicles of the Year” awards are selected by a panel of independent automotive journalists who spend several months evaluating the most stylish, practical and attainable vehicles annually. After driving dozens of cars and trucks in a variety of North American urban settings, they panel selected Veloster as a stand-out performer in the 2012 class.

Hyundai’s all-new 2012 Veloster delivers innovation to the compact coupe segment with standard features such as a unique third door for easy rear-seat access, Hyundai’s Blue Link™ telematics system, Pandora® internet radio, seven-inch touch-screen display, and a new 1.6-liter Gasoline-Direct-Injected (GDI) four-cylinder engine and six-speed transmission. GDI technology helps deliver highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability. With a starting price of $17,300 (plus freight), Veloster adds great value to its compelling list attributes.

“Conceived to attract new, youthful drivers to the Hyundai brand, Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design that combines the best characteristics of both a coupe and hatchback,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The unique personality of the car is attracting many different types of shoppers and we’re honored that the panel of experts with Decisive magazine felt it met the needs of urban drivers so well.”

The Urban Vehicles of the Year winners and finalists will be honored at the 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards (UWA) on Sunday, January 8, 2012, the MotorCity Casino Hotel’s Sound Board Theater in Detroit, Michigan. The 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards, hosted by the Emerging Diversity Education Fund (EDEF) and Decisive Media, has been named the Official Multicultural Event of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) by the 2012 NAIAS Executive Committee.

“The Hyundai Veloster is a combination of a hip and edgy image, along with exceptional value to price and outstanding fuel economy that is perfectly suited for urban drivers,” said Lyndon Conrad Bell, Decisive magazine’s editor-in-chief. “Hyundai’s choice to make its halo car an entry-level model excites us even more. With Veloster, Hyundai definitely proves that high style and reasonable pricing absolutely can go together.”

Hyundai tries new equation with 2012 Veloster

Neither coupe nor sedan, the three-door hatchback sports a style like nothing else on the market

Three is a lonely number in the auto industry. It was once used to describe coupe hatchbacks as a "three-door" because carmakers' silly aversion to the word "hatchback."

And coupes, most of which are actually hatchbacks, are rarely popular outside of the sports car segment.

But now Hyundai has put a new twist on the number 3 — creating a sporty compact car that defies logic and description. Technically, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is not a coupe; it comes with three working doors. Those three doors also mean that it's one opening short of a sedan; though its rear hatch, which carmakers insist is a door, when it isn't, means the Veloster could be labeled a four-door sedan.

The little 1.6-liter direct injection engine gives the Veloster some muscle with 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque.  That's more than enough to tool around town or cruise down the highway.  There are paddle-like shifters with the automatic that can help hold gears longer for additional pick up.

The Veloster seems to handle itself on the road pretty well. During a day of driving, the stiff, light body (the manual model tips the scales at just over 2,500 pounds) handled itself very well. The electric rack-and-pinion steering is not as firm as you'd expect in a sports car, but it holds itself well through corners and feels comfortable on the highway.

The manual Veloster will get you 40 mpg highway and 28 mpg city. (The automatic Veloster hits 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway.)

A look that stands out

But the Veloster is different than all of those compact cars. It has a very distinctive look, like nothing else on the market.

The low, flat roofline gives it a unique profile, and if you opt for the $2,000-style package, the roof looks as if it's entirely made of glass. (It's part of the Panoramic sunroof.) That package also includes 18-inch wheels that look fantastic stuffed up inside its flared fenders.

The low clearance — 5.6 inches — gives the Veloster a mean street look. Its front face is taut and the headlights stretch back and cut into the fenders. The tiny grille and open intakes below the bumper add to that aggressive look.

The rear is equally as mean. The dual glass hatch looks better from the outside looking in than the inside looking out. (You'll see the bar that connects the pieces in your rear view mirror, though your view is not that obstructed.) And the dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes add a shiny jewel to the tail of the package.

The interior is appealing with comfortable, well-bolstered seats, and an asymmetrical dash and lots of gadgets to play with.

There's a nice feel to the front two seats, and the Veloster feels techno-friendly and spacious. There's a 7-inch, high-resolution touch screen at the top of the center stack that is bookended with long, narrow vents.

The controls below the screen are easy to use.

The Veloster also features Hyundai's Blue Link, the next step in telematics and infotainment. It's much more than Bluetooth connectivity and doesn't require a smartphone. There are three basic layers: Assurance, Essentials and Guidance.

Assurance includes safety assistance, collision help (when airbags deploy) and roadside assistance. Think Korean OnStar.

Essentials includes voice-text messaging (which requires the phone to be connected to the car via Bluetooth) and location sharing, which at the touch of a button on the mirror sends your car's location to a predetermined group of friends and your Facebook page. Guidance adds all of the navigation assistance pieces such as traffic alerts, route guidance and the price of gas at nearby locations, as well as turn-by-turn navigation.

Really, none of the ideas are new to the automotive world, but Hyundai has done a good job of packaging them. It will take a few minutes to review and learn them before getting on the road, but it's time well spent.

And of course, there's that third door. The second-row door is on the passenger's side to make it safer for curbside unloading and loading. Really, that makes more sense.
